Ostuni receives the award from Legambiente , the prestigious award certifying the quality of the sea waters and the efficiency of the services provided.
Among the 100 marine and lake locations distributed throughout Italy, awarded by Legambiente and Touring Club Italiano, and then counted in the Blue Guide 2018, the White City appears again. This morning they were assigned with a double ceremony that took place simultaneously in Bari and Rome, the five sought-after sails with which Legambiente awards the best seaside resorts in Italy. To withdraw the recognition for the Municipality of Ostuni near the capital of Puglia, the Mayor Gianfranco Coppola; while the environmental assessor Luigi Nacci participated in the award ceremony held in the capital. Twenty-three in all the places awarded this year, considered the best in Italy, seventeen marine areas and six of the lake. The “yellow” flag of the 5 sails represents the maximum recognition for the quality of the locations not only bathing, but also lake. Among the marine areas of excellence, also that of the Costa del Parco Agricola degli Ulivi secolari, which includes Polignano a Mare, Fasano, Monopoli, Ostuni and Carovigno. The tourist areas gathered in the guide that tells “the most beautiful sea”, have been identified on the basis of data collected by Legambiente: land use, degradation of the landscape and biodiversity, tourism activities; state of coastal areas; mobility; power; water and purification; waste; sustainability initiatives; food safety and typical products; sea, beaches and hinterland, social and health structure. “A recognition – declared the Mayor Coppola on the sidelines of the Bari ceremony – which rewards the synergistic work of a unique area in the world: the centuries-old and centuries-old olive tree plain that runs from Carovigno to Polignano a Mare. Do not plan the future on your own, but enhancing and protecting a homogeneous territory together! The Five sails of Legambiente together with the Blue Flag of the FEE and the Green Flag for the child-friendly beaches , complete the specialty of our territory, appreciated all over the world ». The selection criteria for the assignment of sails – from one to five, assigned on the basis of the data collected by Legambiente and Goletta Verde related to environmental quality and hospitality services – are mainly:
- Water quality
- Sustainability of tourism activities, also judged based on the use of renewable energy
- Separate collection and respect of land consumption
- Presence of free beaches
- Enhancement of historical and food and wine traditions
“I would like to thank Legambiente for the acknowledged recognition – said Councilor Luigi Nacci – but above all for the spur function that it carries out, making sure that we can set ourselves more and more ambitious objectives with a view to conserving and enhancing the environmental resources of the our territory, and in particular the quality of the marine ecosystem. I particularly appreciated the scientific and communication campaign that Legambiente is conducting to combat marine littering, that is the massive presence of waste at sea, especially of plastics. The municipal administration has made a commitment to adhere to the campaign aimed at drastically reducing the use of plastic objects, which are likely to end up in the sea as waste, causing irreparable damage to the marine ecosystem. Therefore, the Municipality of Ostuni will also adopt the ordinance aimed at raising awareness among citizens and public establishments to obviate the use of plastic crockery, opting for those made of compostable material. It is a commitment – concludes Nacci – that I feel I must assume as administrator, because I believe that this too is a sign of civilization that can not be avoided.”
