This area is awarded the prestigious award awarded each year by the FEE – Federation for Environmental Education. A total of 175 Italian Municipalities have been awarded prizes, 70 have landings and 368 beaches, which this year will host the important banner recognized by the Danish NGO. The Blue Flag is awarded according to strict procedures, which follow the Uni-En Iso 9001-2008 protocol. The localities are first selected by an international jury and then by a national one, during which collaboration with numerous institutions is foreseen, from the Ministry of the Environment to that of Culture and Tourism, passing through the General Command of the Capitanerie di Porto-Guardia Costiera, Ispra, the Laboratory of Oceanology and Marine Ecology of the University of Tuscia, the National Council of Chemists and Anci. The parameters within which the subjects involved in the evaluation work range from the absolute validity of the bathing water, to the regular sampling carried out during the summer season. Only if these aspects have been respected can you access the second phase that investigates the efficiency of wastewater and sewerage purification, connected at least to 80% throughout the municipal territory, separate waste collection and proper management of hazardous waste , the presence of vast pedestrian areas, cycle paths, well-kept urban furniture, green areas, adequate services on the beach, such as accessibility and the presence of rescue personnel. The FEE also evaluates the large space dedicated to environmental education courses, particularly for schools and young people, the condition of hotel facilities for public health services, tourist information and updated signage.
“It would seem a foregone conclusion and repetitive – said the Mayor Coppola – instead it is a major objective, which involves the maintenance of a standard not unimportant, just think that to lose the recognition would not be respecting one of the basic criteria for its obtainment, such as the lowering of the percentage of separate collection.
